Gmail is a web based, free email service provided by Google. For the users who are registered, the site offers exchanging mails with one another. If you want to communicate with a particular person, or a group of persons, the Gmail has many features that meet your web based communication needs.

Registering a new Email Id

1.     Open the Gmail website.

2.     Click on ‘Signup’

3.     Fill in the ‘First’ and ‘Last’ names fields.

4.     Next, type in your desired ‘username’. This username is your email id of Gmail. Using this, you can access all of Google features.

5.     Then, create your password for safety and then re-enter the same password, for confirmation purpose.

6.     Enter your ‘Date of Birth’.

7.     Select your ‘Gender’ from the drop down box.

8.     Enter your Mobile Phone number.

9.     Type in your current email address.

10.                     Then, confirm that you are not a robot, by entering the captcha in the desired field.
11.                        Check the checkbox, confirming your agreement to the Terms and Conditions of Gmail.
12.                        Finally, click on the ‘Next Step’ button.

With this, your Gmail id is created and you can start using your new Gmail Id.

Note - Signing up for Gmail, be default gives you a Google account, giving you access to all of the Google features.

Signing in Into Gmail

1.     Open the Gmail website.

2.     The page loaded asks you to enter your mail id, type in your mail id you have created while registration and click on ‘Next’.

3.     In the next page, it will ask for your password which you have created while registration, type in and click on ‘Sign In’.

4.     And then, in the loading page, in the far right corner you can see that the Gmail is loading in Standard view. You can change this to ‘Load Basic HTML view’, if you are having a slow internet.

That’s it, you have finally created the Gmail Id, and logged into your Gmail account. You can start exchanging messages with your network, and start being useful to your society.

Let us look into the features that Gmail offers:

Sending Message

If you want to send a message, then follow these steps:

1.     Open the Gmail website

2.     Login with your credentials

3.     Click on ‘Compose’, in the page that loads. It will be on the left side of the Gmail page.

4.     Then a pop up window will open where you can compose a new message.

5.     In the ‘To’ field, type in the mail id of the person, to whom you want to send the message. Or else, you can type in multiple mail ids’ if you want to send the message to multiple people.

6.     To include multiple people, you can also click on ‘CC’, in which you can add those additional people mail ids.

7.     Click on ‘BCC’, and add those additional mail ids, if you want to hide the identity of each other person from another.

8.     In the ‘Subject’ field, add the brief subject of your message.

9.     And then, compose your message in the large blank area.

10.                        Finally, click on send, to send the message to your desired recipients.

Note – Additionally, you can format the text of your message using various formatting options available in the ‘Compose Message window’. Moreover, there is another option wherein you can attach any file to the message being sent.

Receiving Messages

Using Gmail, you can also receive messages from your friends:

1.     Open the Gmail website

2.     Login with your credentials

3.     Then, in the current loaded webpage, you will see default five tabs, under which the messages received are classified and displayed under each tab. Based on your requirement, you can remove these tabs, or add any new tab also, from your account settings.

a.     Primary – For those messages which are from your friends, or family or any other that do not fall under other tabs.

b.     Promotions – Any advertising emails such as deals, offers and any other promotional emails.

c.      Social - Messages related to media-sharing sites, social networks, gaming platforms, online dating services, and other social websites.

d.     Updates – Messages that are confirmations, bills, receipts, and statements.
e.     Forums – Messages from discussion boards, forums and such other.

4.     Based on the importance and the criteria of a message, you can mark the messages as important, add star, send the message to spam folder, or even delete the message and send it to ‘Trash’ folder.

5.     In your inbox, a message colour represents its reading status. If unread, it is displayed in white colour, and after reading it, the message will turn to grey colour.

6.     You can perform multiple operations on your messages in inbox at the same time, by selecting the required messages through the check box on its extreme right. Additional menu items will appear above your inbox, once the selection of the messages is done.

Other Features

1.     After reading a message, you can send a ‘reply to’ the sender, by clicking on the reply option above the message.

2.     After reading a message, you can ‘forward’ the message to the followers, by clicking on the forward option above the message.

3.     If your inbox has a lot of messages in various pages, instead of going over each and every page, using the search bar on the top of the webpage, you can search for a particular message or a set of messages, by giving search strings in the available search options.

4.     If you want to change the appearance of your Gmail, then you can choose the theme that you want from a lot of options available in the settings page.

5.     Using the Hangouts, you can directly in real-time chat online with your Gmail contacts.

6.     You can even have video calls with your Gmail contacts, using the Hangouts.

Hotmail has been around much before any other email service came to be on the internet.
